ABOUT

The Skipper Science Partnership utilizes a smartphone app to submit environmental observations to fill data gaps through collaborative targeted research programs that work with Alaska's commercial fishing fleets.

The app is powered by the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island’s Indigenous Sentinels Network (ISN) software platform. Skipper Science aims to connect fishermen’s observations to relevant managers and scientists to better address fishery & conservation challenges driven by climate change. Fishermen are uniquely poised within ocean systems to observe environmental trends and abnormalities year-round that can contribute important information and insights to fisheries management, providing near-real time perspectives on rapidly changing socio-ecological systems. Observation forms used in the app are created through consultation with research partners and participants. Observations can be made without service or wi-fi connectivity and uploaded when service is reached. This program relies on the trust of the fishing community, and strict data privacy policies protect users identity, data is stored by Skipper Science.
